Notocactus is a genus of about 25 species of South-American cacti form low elevations of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Southern Brazil. Since the name Parodia was used before Notocactus, it has precedence and all the Notocactus became Parodia. Closely related is Parodia, which comes from somewhat higher and dryer locales than Notocactus.
They are often solitary, rarely offsetting, or producing stolons. All Notocactus are slow growing plants and make excellent house plants. They are globular to low columnar with characteristically depressed centers, usually many ribs, and usually many fine spines. They tend to be fairly short growing plants, but some species can reach 3 feet (90 cm), with cylindrical and spherical stems which are rarely branched. They are upright growing plants but may occasionally grow sideways with the top half looking as though it is wilting, this is less common that the upright growth and usually only occurs in old plants. The flowers usually last a week and tend to be yellow, in profusion, with red stigma lobes, and are borne on the upper "shoulders" of the plants in spring. Seed capsules retain the dried flower and are dry and papery when ripe. The seeds frequently fall next to the mother plant and germinate there. Well, it doesn't get any better than Chamaedorea florida, or the Bamboo Palm. The Bamboo Palm, or Reed Palm, is a relatively small, graceful palm that grows to about 7 feet. Usually, when these plants are sold in nurseries, they are clumped with about 20 or 30 individual plants. Each stem is long and slender with "nodes" very similar in appearance to bamboo. Although these plants are commercially clumped together to form shrub-like specimens, this palm naturally spreads by suckers or offshoots that are also similar to bamboo. The stems are tall and have about 10-15 fronds each with about 12 dark green pinnate leaflets. As the old fronds die, these should be trimmed off and the leaf bases, or sheaths, allowed to dry. Later, these should be removed to promote good plant hygiene and expose the attractive light green "bamboo stem." Although the Bamboo Palm is mostly used indoors because it prefers shade, it can withstand higher light and will produce flowers and fruit in these environments. A collection of five contrasting Basils to provide different leaf textures, colours and fragrances. CINNAMON is highly ornamental because of its purple flowers and dark green leaves and cinnamon-like aroma; LEMON with afresh citrus fragrance; SWEET which combines the flavours of mint and cloves; BUSH with compact habit and spicy leaves; and THAI with purple-red flowers and fresh green foliage which offers an intense licorice aroma. Excellent for bedding edging and the vegetable or flower garden and also happy on a windowsill or in pots on the patio.<br> PACKET CONTENTS: One packet each of: Cinnamon Basil, lemon Basil, Sweet Basil, Bush Basil and Purple leaved Thai Basil. <p> Plant Type: Herb <br> Sowing: Sow 1/16in (1.5mm) deep in good seed sowing compost from Late February to late April. Germination takes 7-14 days at 65-70F (18-20C). <br> Growing on: When large enough to handle transplant the seedlings to 7.5cm (3in) pots and when well grown gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions. Plant out in May after all risk of frost has passed 30cm (12in) apart, preferably in a warm, sheltered site in full sun and well-drained soil. <br> Aftercare: Water early in the day and don't overwater. Purple Basil also looks good as the centrepiece of a hanging basket. For containers and baskets grow on in 7.5cm (3in) pots and plant up allowing each plant 10-15cm (4-6in) of space.
