Sarracenia alata Red Throat is green with a red interior lid and a red throat. It produces delicate looking yellow to cream colored flowers on tall stems in the early Spring, usually before pitcher growth begins.
They trap their prey by offering them nectar to sip which is secreted around the lip of the plant and also at the base of the lid. Flying and crawling insects will find the nectar and if they take a wrong step, they will tumble into the pitcher. Once inside, they will find that retreat is impossible, due to short stiff hairs pointing downward. The inside of the pitchers are also very slippery. Once the insect reaches the bottom, it is dissolved by enzymes in the bottom of the pitcher and the nutrient value is absorbed by the plant.
Hardiness zone 8, (-10°C/15°F) in Winter. They can grow well in pure sphagnum moss, as well as the standard peat moss/sand which can be anything from 30% to 100% peat moss. There's no need to fertilize, as the plant relies on insects for food. The humidity should be between 60-80%.
Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings. Water must be distilled or rain water because they do not tolerate city or hard water. It is a good idea to place a pie pan or large saucer, with about an inch of water in it, under the pot. Elevate the pot by placing pebbles under it so that the base of the pot is barely in contact with the water, not submerged; the growing medium must stay moist, but never soggy. This will keep the humidity around the plant higher and it will ensure that the plant has a constant source of moisture.

Sweet William is winter hardy to USDA Zones 3-9. This is a short-lived perennial wild flower that is perhaps best grown as a biennial. Many of the new cultivars will bloom the first year from wild flower seed if the seed is started early enough. Sweet William is best grown in deep, organically rich, well-drained soils in full sun, but generally appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates such as the South. In optimum growing conditions it will reseed each year and remain in the garden for many years as if it were a long-lived perennial. Double-flowered forms will not come true from seed, however. Sweet woodruff is an excellent ground cover in shaded areas. The plant spreads rapidly and bears white flowers in May. The leaves are mildly fragrant when dried. Plant in any well-drained soil in early fall or spring.
Propagation is by seed or division in spring or fall. Lift the plants and separate them into rooted pieces then replant immediately.
A couple years ago I stuck a little start of Sweet Woodruff (Asperula odorata aka Galium odoratum) way back in a dark corner under huge shrubs that frame a basement window. It spread rapidly. It is a good choice for under trees up close to the trunks, just so long as it doesn't get too terribly dry. I hardly ever see this patch, hidden as it is way back under fountaining shrubs. But if I get down on my knees & look under the shrubs, it is always doing dandy.
It blooms throughout May, tiny white blossoms scattered over the top of eight inch tall greenery.
A traditional herbal remedy when mixed with wine, it was once regarded as good for just about anything that ails ya, & provided Grandma with a respectable method of being a wino.
